Church on The Main- In Pointe at Jamestown

church on the main The Williamsburg Land Conservancy permanently protects this 1.39 –acre site where the Church on the Main stood for around 100 years.  The Battle of Greensprings was fought on the site, and it is believed the church served as a hospital for the battle’s wounded soldiers.  An archeological team led by Alain Outlaw has been working on the site for many years.  The team was able to locate the church’s foundation, and identified 210 gravesites that surrounded the actual church.

    Area History

church on the main jamestown The late 17th Century saw extremely rapid growth in the population of James City County. While most of this population was concentrated in Jamestown and the Middle Plantation ( Williamsburg), small agricultural holdings along the James River also saw a significant increase in population and land cleared for farming. One such holding arose approximately 2 miles from Jamestown on an area known as “the Main.” Sometime in the early 1750’s a new parish was built on the Main in response to the increasing populations in the mainland area and to accommodate the parishioners of the James City Parish in Jamestown, which was destroyed by fire around that time. This Church on the Main continued to serve Anglican congregations for approximately 60 years. Though it is unclear when the facility ceased functioning as a church, records show its continued usage through 1805, and it is documented that the building remained in existence until shortly after the Civil War.

    The Battle of Greenspring

battle of greenspring During the Revolutionary War, the Battle of Greenspring took place on the property of the parish and in its immediate vicinity. On July 6, 1781, the forces of General Wayne (serving with General Lafayette) met the far superior British forces of General Cornwallis. Though outnumbered 8:1 in battle the American forces were able to retreat from the battle and later met the forces of Cornwallis in a decisive victory at Yorktown.

Between 30-50 British, American, and French soldiers were killed in the Battle of Greenspring, and it is speculated that some of these soldiers might be buried in the Cemetery of the Church on the Main.

James City County is located in the Hampton Roads region of Virginia and is situated between the James and York Rivers, tidal rivers that join the Chesapeake Bay.

Shoppers can enjoy more than 22 shopping centers in the county as well as two popular outlet malls. Both York River State Park and Colonial National Historic Park are located in James City County as well as 13 other parks. In addition, Busch Gardens, named “the most beautiful theme park” in the nation, and Water Country USA are other attractions that bring families to vacation here.

entrance laf ontaine williamsburg Being located in James City County the La Fontaine Condos enjoy the low current property tax of .77 per $100. Equating to approximately $1500 in annual property taxes.

La Fontaine Condos is conveniently located off of Route 199 and Rt 5. Directly behind Williamsburg Crossing Shopping Center with it’s Bloom Market, restaurants and other assorted shops. It also lies within a few miles of Colonial Williamsburg and the College of William and Mary.

If you tour the condo communities in Williamsburg VA you will notice a certain similarity in quite a few. The reason being Franciscus Homes built most of them including; La Fontaine, Claiborne, Bristol Commons, Fairway Villas and Braemar Creek.

Note :Although these are condos from the exterior they look like town homes.

lafontaineview   What’s the difference you ask ? Well ,a townhouse is like a house in that the owner owns both the structure and the land on which it sits; but it is not free-standing, so "the land on which it sits" is limited to the front and back yards.  Town homes are connected to one another in a row, and are usually one,two or three stories tall. It is important to note that townhouse refers to the type of house and not to the type of ownership.  The ownership responsibility in a townhouse (townhome) is the same as for a house; however, there may be differing circumstances from development to development, city to city or state to state regarding who owns the outside walls, roof, etc. of the structure which must be verified with local authorities.

Like townhouses, condominiums are attached to one another. If you own a  condo, you do not own the land surrounding your living space. A condo owner owns only the unit itself, which is taxed as an individual entity, and sometimes a percentage of the common areas of the community.  It is important to note that condominium (condo) refers only to type of ownership and is NOT a type of house.

lafontainepool1 If that doesn’t make sense send me an email for further clarification. John@MrWilliamsburg.com

La Fontaine  offers it’s residents a beautiful pool and walking trails throughout the community. There are approximately  120 homes in the community.

The monthly condo/home owner fee in La Fontaine  is $142 . It covers all common Area Maintenance ( entrances, pool  , all exterior home maintenance , all exterior lawn maintenance and some insurance.
La Fontaine Condos make excellent second home options in Williamsburg with their all inclusive maintenance .

Williamsburg/ James City County Schools assigned at this time are Norge Elementary, Toano Middle and the new Warhill High School although there will be redistricting in 2010 when the new middle and elementary schools open. There is a high probability that the neighborhood will be zoned for the new Elementary and Middle Schools.

The new elementary school will bear the name of the late Dr. J. Blaine Blayton, a well‐known African American physician who practiced medicine for 50 years in the Williamsburg area and beyond. The new middle school will honor Lois S. Hornsby, a longtime fixture in the Williamsburg , VA community.

windmill meadows williamsburg va Associated Developers and Beamon Construction have opened a new community off of Centerville Rd in Williamsburg James City County Virginia. Upon researching the approval of the neighborhood on the James City County Planning site I noticed that there is a restrictive covenant which prohibits outdoor irrigation of any kind from the public water supply. This apparently is part of A Water Conservation Agreement with our local water supplier JCSA ( James City County Service Authority). This is a pretty radical proposal. NO watering your yard !

It will be interesting to see if anyone installs a cistern to store rainwater. I am assuming this would be the only way you can water a yard in Windmill Meadows.

Homes are being built by Beamer Construction of Williamsburg VA. Beamer has built many homes in the area and was the developer of the Powhatan Secondary community.

EarthCraft House is a green building program that serves as a blueprint for healthy comfortable homes that reduce utility bills and protect the environment. The aim of the program is to help home builders be leaders in smart growth management and environmental stewardship.

Building an EarthCraft House is about constructing a healthy, more valuable home while minimizing environmental impacts. EarthCraft House follows a systems approach to home building that stresses an understanding of how the different components of a home work together. This approach results in a home that performs better, is more economical for the homeowner and costs little more to build than a comparable home built with standard construction practices.

EarthCraft House guidelines address energy efficiency, durability, indoor air quality, resource efficiency, waste management, and water conservation.

Today’s home buyers want to get the most house for their money. In addition to paying a monthly mortgage, home owners must also pay for utilities, maintenance and repair. All of these factors must be taken into consideration when determining the true cost of home ownership. A durable energy efficient house can be more economical and affordable even if it has a higher asking price than another home built with standard construction practices. (True cost of home ownership ).
